The Girl I loved - Part 3

”Rahul?”
“Rahul? You there?” I could hear a faint voice ringing through my ears but it felt as if I was engulfed in a daze.
The world seemed upside down as I walked through the forest of despair and with every step I took, all the greenery that surrounded me started to burn as the fire engulfed them turning them into nothing but ashes.
It seemed as if I was the epicentre of all the sadness in the world and whatever goodness that got into my vicinity either gyrated their way into nothingness or transformed themselves into the sadness that was emancipating from me.
“Rahul!” someone shouted a bit louder and suddenly I was being shook by the shoulder as my mind spun around and I finally seemed to get back into my senses.
Opening my own eyes seemed like a burden to me but I managed to open them after a considerable amount of effort.
I was greeted with the view of Ajit kneeling down beside me with a frown adorning on his brow and his face laced with concern.
“Ajit?” I blurted out as I finally got back to normal.
“Thank god you’re fine,” he let out his breath in a whoosh. “But why were you lying down there? What happened to you?”
I found myself getting confused when he said that and I looked around to take in the surroundings only to find myself laid down on the couch in my living room. I couldn’t remember how I got here.
“What do you mean?” I asked with my eyes wide open.
“You were lying unconscious on the ground at the backside of Priya’s house. We searched for you for half an hour before we found you there and carried you here,” he said in a tone of uncertainty.
Unconscious? Priya’s house? Backside? Things slowly started to get back into my mind as I finally regained what has happened.
Priya! Arjun! Together!
My mind started to revolve again as those horrible thoughts took hold of me as my resolve weakened. I probably might have lost my consciousness again if not for Ajit’s effort in clutching hold of me and helping me get seated in an upright position.
“What happened Arjun? I don’t understand.”
I closed my eyes for a second getting my mind straight as I put all those stray thoughts together and made a sense of what was happening.
“Priya. Priya, left me. I let her go,” I said, my words blurred with my sorrow.
“What do you mean Priya left you? Why would she leave you when she loves you?”
What!
“What? Priya loves me?” I said staring at him with my heart desperate to capture the truth behind those words.
“Please tell me you’re kidding. You don’t know Priya loves you?” he asked in disbelief as I shook my head.
“What the hell’s wrong with you man. She’s been in love with you since who knows how long. Everyone in our friends circle calls you people the made for each other couple and you don’t know anything?” he said with both his hands raised in astonishment as he looked at me as if I just arrived some other planet.
“What are you saying Ajit? She never loved me. She just treated me as her best friend and nothing more. It’s just me who loved her,” I said with uncertainty hoping from every corner of my heart that what I said wasn't the truth and he let out a sarcastic laugh.
“Ok, tell me this. Since when are you in love with her?”
“I don’t know. Maybe five to six years?” I said almost as a whisper with my voice barely audible due to the uncertainty.
“Nope. You couldn't even realise that you were in love with her from the first sight of her when her family moved into the neighbourhood ten years ago. You've been in love with her even before you knew the meaning of love. Being your best friend, I know how close you both used to be. How come would you known that she too loved you when you weren't even aware of your own feelings? Are you aware of the way she looks at you the whole time? I bet everyone around you people knows that you both loved each other, other than you. Either you’re blind enough to see that or you’re too much drowned in the depth of your feelings for her that you didn't take notice of her feelings for you. She was waiting for you to propose to her man. I could tell that from just looking at her,” he said all of it in one breath as I just kept staring at him with my eyes wide and my heart pounding my blood at unimaginable speeds.
I was stunned and just kept looking here and there for five minutes as I contemplated on what he just said. It was too much for me to take in.
“But…….but she’s with Arjun now. They...them…...together…..” I kept on stammering as he shook his head. “She hates me now. I've backed away when she needed me and now she loves Arjun. There’re going get engaged. I …… I don’t know what to do.”
“Rahul, listen to me. She doesn't love him. She loves you. Don’t you forget that,” he said but it was me who was present when she walked away with him. It was me who saw her rest her head on his shoulder as he had his wrapped around her waist.
“No mate, she loves him now. I….I saw them together. She…...she hates me,” I said as the horror of those words I just uttered only caused the despair in me to raise into peaks.
“Please don’t say that Rahul. Just go and talk to her. If whatever you just said is true, then she doesn't deserve you for all the love you have for her…..” but I cut him off saying, “It’s me who doesn't deserve her. It was me who left her when she needed me. Everything that happened this evening was because of me. Me. Me.”
“JUST SHUT THE HELL UP AND GO TALK TO HER NOW,” he shouted so loud that my eyes thudded with the vibrations and the sound echoed in the room.
It was my instincts that guided me to stand up and without thinking for a moment I let them guide me to my girl.
When I got to their house, it only increased to my worry to find their house locked. I decided to wait by their main door for them to return from wherever they went to.
It was after thirty minutes when I finally heard the honk of a car as it turned in through the gate, parking at the garage.
As the door opened, I was greeted with the view of my girl getting out and she was dressed in a glittering yellow knee length salwar kameez that seemed beautiful just because she was wearing it. She looked gorgeous with her waist length hair flowing freely behind her and her face adorned with minimal make-up that complimented her natural beauty. It took me a couple of moments to get back to my senses when I found her walking in my direction towards the main door with…...with Rohit by her side as it seemed like they went for shopping due to all those bags they were carrying.
She was like two feet from me when I said, “Priya.”
She turned to look at me and stared at me for like two seconds before she brushed past me into the house without acknowledging me and I gaped at her diminishing form for a second as she rounded the corner and vanished into her bedroom.
It was as if the final nail was nailed into my coffin and I just stood staring at the spot where I've last seen her. My senses left me and my heart seemed to stop for a second before continuing to beat as sluggishly as possible as if it has no interest in beating any more just because it lost its purpose to do so.
I was so involved in my sorrow that I didn't notice Arjun beside me looking at me with a wicked grin on his face.
“Having a great time buddy?” he said smiling with an evil glint in his eyes which seemed to pity me on my condition.
When I didn't reply, he continued, “looks like she chose me over you. After all, which girl who looks like her would want a guy like you when she gets a rich and successful guy like me. Let’s just wait till we marry, I’ll show her what a successful guy can do.”
My hands fisted at my side as the rage filled every single nerve of my body. Veins popped out of my neck and it took what seemed like inconsiderable amount of restraint to hold myself from knocking him out and punching his face into pulp until his life bleeds out of him.
He must have noticed the look on my face as his face turned from what it was earlier into one of a horrified one as his eyes gripped with fear and his hands shook slightly as he got off in the direction of his room before I could do anything.
Once he left, my anger seemed to dissipate as quick as it enveloped me only to be replaced once again by the sorry, despair, worry and all of their synonyms.
I've lost her forever and she wasn't mine now. But I wouldn't let him have her as well.
She’s far too good for him and his wicked schemes. I don’t care even if she wouldn't be mine forever and wouldn't love me any more. But I still love her and I’d do whatever it takes to keep her safe from people like Arjun…...to be continued.
